Description

The study investigates the viewpoint of both educators and learners about the determinants affecting the teaching of English translation at Hanoi Law University. Meeting the increasing demand for legal translation proficiency, addressing the factors that shape teaching and learning practices is essential for improving pedagogical effectiveness. Employing a mixed-methods approach, this research examines key aspects including teacher-related factors, student-related factors, institution-related factors, and teaching materials. Findings reveal teachers’ difficulties connect to professional qualifications and organizing, implementing and managing students out-of-class time, whereas students lack motivation, grammatical knowledge, and practical skills. Especially, teaching material displays much limitation needed improving. Additionally, the study affirms the role of digital tools and collaborative learning in enhancing translation competency. Results suggest that a dynamic and adaptive teaching practices, incorporating interactive methodologies and real-world translation scenarios, can significantly improve students' translation skills and readiness for professional contexts. The research underscores the necessity of institutional support, continuous curriculum refinement, and professional development for educators to foster a more effective learning environment. Based on the findings, this study proposes recommendations for bridging pedagogical gaps, optimizing teaching strategies, and enhancing student engagement in translation studies at Hanoi Law University.

Biography

Nguyen Thi Huong Lan has been a lecturer at the Faculty of Legal Foreign Languages, Hanoi Law University for over 16 years, with 12 years of teaching legal English and 7 years of teaching English translation and interpretation. She graduated with a bachelor's and master's degree from the University of Languages and International Studies - Vietnam National University, Hanoi. Her research focus is on teaching methodology. She has had more than 15 works published in prestigious domestic and foreign journals. Her works cover a wide range of topics from general English to specialized English. Her latest work is a university-level research topic focusing on teaching translation. She is always eager to learn, explore and discover new things in the field of teaching.
