Critical thinking skills are 21st century skills needed in the classroom and in real life, and the development of skills among learners depends much on formative assessment practices employed by teachers. The study seeks to investigate teacher’s perception and their challenges towards using project-based learning in formative assessment to develop EFL learners’ high-order thinking skills. The research is conducted through a mixed-method approach of quantitative and qualitative methods. A questionnaire was administered to 76 EFL high school teachers, and five teachers were interviewed. Quantitative data were analyzed using descriptive statistics while the data from qualitative were coded and analyzed in themes. The results showed that teachers had a positive attitude towards implementing project-based learning in formative assessment. This study revealed that using project-based learning to evaluate learner’s learning and enhance their development of critical thinking skills. The study also indicated that factors related to materials, time constraints and teacher’s language proficiency affected using project-based in formative assessment. The paper also suggested recommendations for further studies in the field of project-based learning.
Biography
Nguyen Thi Nuong Yen is teaching at Hoa An High School – Hau Giang Province. The point of view in her teaching is “The teacher is the one who gets the most out of the lessons, and the true teacher is the learners”. Elbert Hubbard (1856 – 1951). She concerns the topic that related to students’ critical thinking.
