Description

Purpose - This study aims to investigate effective strategies for fostering intercultural competence among English majors at Thu Dau Mot University (TDMU), where the current English curriculum primarily emphasizes linguistic proficiency, with limited focus on intercultural learning.
Methodology - A mixed-methods design was employed, involving 120 English majors and 12 educators at TDMU. Data were collected through questionnaires, semi-structured interviews, and classroom observations. Quantitative data were analyzed using SPSS for descriptive and inferential statistics, including t-tests and ANOVA. Qualitative data were subjected to thematic analysis to identify recurring patterns and insights.
Findings - The findings reveal that strategies such as cultural immersion, intercultural dialogue, reflective practice, and digital exchanges significantly contribute to the development of students’ intercultural competence. Nevertheless, implementation is hindered by challenges including limited teacher training and assessment difficulties.
Significance - This study offers practical recommendations for integrating intercultural competence into English language education. It highlights the importance of curriculum reform, targeted teacher development, and improved assessment methods, ultimately contributing to the preparation of English majors for effective cross-cultural communication and global citizenship.

Biography

M.A. Le Van Duc is a lecturer at the Institute of Foreign Language Training, Thu Dau Mot University, Vietnam. He holds a Master’s degree in TESOL and English Linguistics. He is currently pursuing a Ph.D. in Contrastive Linguistics at the University of Social Sciences and Humanities, Vietnam National University. His primary research interests include pragmatics, discourse analysis, sociolinguistics, English language teaching methodologies, and applied linguistics. He has published works in both language pedagogy and linguistic studies.
Dr Tran Thanh Du is majoring in Contrasive Linguistics. He is currently a lecturer and also the head of the Institute of Foreign Language Training at Thu Dau Mot University in Viet Nam. He takes his interests in studies of linguistics, learner motivation and language teaching methodologies.
M.A. Nguyen Thanh Xuan is a lecturer at the Institute of Foreign Language Training at Thu Dau Mot University in Viet Nam. Her research interests focus on English language teaching and linguistic studies.
