Description

With the increasing use of personal smart devices among students in modern society, effectively leveraging technology to foster learner autonomy has become an urgent requirement for educators, especially English teachers. Kahoot, an educational application, has been utilized in teaching and learning in Yen Bai province for several years. In this action research project, the authors explored a new approach to using the Kahoot app—encouraging students to self create English language game sets that revise vocabulary and grammar topics from the Global Success textbook. Specifically, students were assigned projects to design Kahoot game sets containing quizzes on vocabulary, grammar, or test-like questions. This activity aimed to actively engage students in their learning and gradually develop their autonomy. The research was conducted during the 2024–2025 academic year, involving 150 eleventh-grade students from Nghia Lo High School, Nguyen Hue High School, and Hoang Quoc Viet High School. The authors guided students to create language games on Kahoot based on the vocabulary, grammar points, and pronunciation of each learning unit. This approach not only encouraged students to use smart devices for educational purposes but also made learning English more active and engaging. To evaluate the effectiveness of the project, three instruments were used: a pre-test, a post-test, and student feedback surveys regarding their enjoyment of learning English. The results indicated that designing Kahoot games helped students effectively use technology to enhance learner autonomy and promote mobile-assisted language learning. It is hoped that this research will benefit other schools and educational institutions.
