Description
Microteaching has long been recognized as a crucial component in teacher education, providing pre-service teachers with a safe and supportive environment to practice essential teaching skills before entering real classrooms. This qualitative study explores the impact of microteaching on the professional growth of English pre-service teachers at Lambung Mangkurat University, focusing on their development in pedagogical knowledge, classroom management, teaching confidence, and reflective practice.
Data were collected through open-ended surveys and semi-structured interviews with 20 English education students who had recently completed their microteaching course. The participants shared their experiences, challenges, and perceived growth throughout the program. Thematic analysis revealed that microteaching significantly contributed to the participants’ professional development by allowing them to experiment with lesson planning, instructional techniques, and peer feedback.
Students reported increased self-confidence, improved classroom communication, and greater awareness of their teaching strengths and areas for improvement. Peer evaluations and feedback from lecturers were highlighted as valuable tools for reflection and self-assessment. Additionally, participants acknowledged the role of microteaching in helping them shift from a student mindset to that of a teacher.
However, the study also identified challenges such as performance anxiety and the limited realism of simulated classroom settings. These findings suggest the need to enhance microteaching by incorporating more contextual elements and authentic teaching scenarios. This study underscores the importance of microteaching in shaping the professional identity and teaching readiness of English pre-service teachers and offers practical insights for improving teacher preparation programs in similar contexts.
