Description

The poster presentation visually explores the case study-based research on the OPEN Alumni, a community of practice (CoP) among alumni of the Online Profession for the English Network (OPEN) program in Vietnam. The research investigates the creation of the OPEN Alumni, characterized by the properties of domain, practice, and community (Wenger, 1998) and draws upon Wenger, McDermott, and Snyder’s (2002) framework for cultivating sustainable CoP. It focuses on how OPEN-alumni teachers utilize social networks like Facebook and Zalo chat groups to establish communities of practice for professional development and examines the impact of their projects on nationwide teaching communities.

Since its launch in 2022, this CoP has grown to include nearly 200 members across Vietnam. Through thematic analysis of posts and interactions, it is evident that OPEN alumni are highly motivated to engage in professional information and teaching experience exchange. Beyond facilitating professional development practices, alumni have initiated projects to support the teaching communities: OPEN Outreach, which brings alumni experts to disadvataged areas to hold 30 hands-on workshops involving nearly 800 K12 teachers; OPEN Meet, which hosts meeting and training sessions for its members; OPEN Support, which provides direct support to participants of OPEN global program during the completion of their courses; OPEN Camp, which organizes face-to-face meetings for participants of OPEN MOOC courses; and OPEN Events, which invites alumni experts to share educational opportunities and to conduct workshops for teachers.

The presentation combines engaging visuals, infographics, and explanations to convey innovative strategies for leveraging the OPEN alumni-led community.
