Description
In response to global integration, Vietnam has implemented substantial reforms in its English language teaching (ELT) sector to improve communicative competence and adopt modern teaching methods. The effectiveness of these reforms significantly depends on teachers' ability to adapt their instructional practices. This review paper examines the cognitions and practices of EFL teachers in Vietnam concerning professional development amidst recent curriculum reforms. The study analyzes 21 academic papers published from 2017 to 2024 across various journals and international conference proceedings. A systematic review methodology is utilized to synthesize findings from these research studies, focusing on teachers' perceptions, the adoption of innovative teaching methodologies, integration of information and communication technologies (ICT), and assessment practices. Results indicate a complex relationship between teachers' beliefs and their instructional approaches, revealing both alignment and discrepancies. The findings emphasize the necessity for targeted professional development programs that cater to teachers' specific needs and challenges, aiming to bridge the gap between educational policy and practical implementation in the classroom.
