Description

This study investigates the translation strategies employed in rendering film titles between English and Vietnamese, focusing on both English-language films released in Vietnam and Vietnamese films distributed internationally. By analyzing a corpus of 50 English film titles and their Vietnamese translations, along with 50 Vietnamese film titles and their official English versions, the research identifies three main translation strategies: literal translation, semantic translation, adaptation. The findings show that semantic translation and adaptation are the most frequently used strategies in both directions, reflecting the need to balance meaning, cultural relevance, and commercial appeal. The study also explores the challenges faced by translators, including linguistic differences, cultural gaps, and market-driven constraints. Based on the analysis, recommendations are proposed for translators to improve the effectiveness of film title translation, emphasizing cultural nuances, creativity, and collaboration. This research contributes to translation studies and provides practical insights into the localization of film titles in a globalized context.
