Description

ABSTRACT
This descriptive study investigates the English-speaking skills of 30 Meranaw students officially enrolled in the Bachelor of Secondary Education major in English program for the first semester of the academic year 2024-2025. It aims to compare the speaking skills of students from mono-cultural and multi-cultural communities. The study evaluates their proficiency in enunciation, diction, fluency, and grammar while exploring factors such as exposure to other cultures, languages, and the amount of linguistic input. Furthermore, this study examines the relationships among community type, exploring factors, and the students’ speaking skill levels. Data were gathered using survey questionnaires and activities such as poem reading, storytelling, and extemporaneous speech. The results revealed that there is no significant relationship between the level of speaking skills and the factors affecting the speaking skills, however, there is a significant difference between the level of speaking skills of the respondents coming from the mono-cultural and multi-cultural communities. Students from multi-cultural communities demonstrated excellent speaking skills compared to those from the mono-cultural communities. To help people from mono-cultural communities improve their speaking skills, it is recommended to create programs that encourage interacting with other cultures, such as language clubs or debates and other speaking activities, to provide more learning opportunities.
