Description

This research was examines the factors influencing students' motivation to learn English, focusing on Year 1–3 students majoring in General English at the Faculty of Languages, Souphanouvong University. The objective of the study is to identify key motivational factors among these students during the 2023–2024 academic year. The target population consisted of 87 students, including 50 females, selected through convenience sampling from Year 1–3 classes. A survey research design was employed, utilizing a structured questionnaire as the primary data collection instrument. The questionnaire comprised 43 items across three main sections. Data were analyzed using the Statistical Package for the Social Sciences (SPSS), applying descriptive statistics such as percentage, mean (M), and standard deviation (S.D).
The findings indicate that students demonstrated a high level of motivation for learning English, with internal factors exerting a stronger influence than external ones. Nevertheless, external factors also played a significant role. The top three motivational factors identified were: (1) positive attitudes toward English based on perceived career benefits; (2) personal interest and curiosity, particularly related to travel and cultural exploration; and (3) parental support through encouragement, financial assistance, and provision of learning resources.
