Description
This study examines the application of Visual Arts in project-based English instruction as a means to foster student engagement, linguistic development, and creative expression in upper secondary classrooms. Drawing on the theoretical framework of Project-Based Learning (PBL) and principles of multimodal pedagogy, the approach integrates visual literacy into language teaching through the design and implementation of creative tasks. These include infographic creation, video production, and oral presentations, aiming to provide learners with meaningful opportunities to practice English in authentic and contextually rich scenarios.
The use of Visual Arts is found to support second language acquisition by providing visual scaffolds that aid in vocabulary retention, grammatical comprehension, and discourse organization. Furthermore, the integration of arts-based activities contributes to the development of critical soft skills such as collaboration, self-direction, and digital communication. These competencies are essential in preparing learners to meet the demands of 21st-century education and align with the broader objectives of sustainable and inclusive learning.
Qualitative data were collected through classroom observations, student products, and teacher reflections. Findings indicate that the approach enhances student motivation, promotes learner autonomy, and increases participation in language use tasks. Notably, the creative dimension of the projects encouraged greater ownership of learning and more meaningful language output.
The presentation proposes practical recommendations for educators seeking to embed arts-integrated tasks within ELT frameworks. It highlights the potential of interdisciplinary practices to enrich English language teaching in alignment with Vietnam’s curriculum reform and global competence development

In the classroom, I am especially interested in integrating Visual Arts into English teaching through project-based learning. I believe that when learners are given opportunities to create, present, and reflect, they become more confident, autonomous, and motivated. I also actively mentor students and lead Youth Union activities, which help develop leadership, collaboration, and civic responsibility.
I have been fortunate to receive several honors, including the Outstanding Young Teacher Award and First Prize in the Provincial Excellent Homeroom Teacher Competition. These recognitions encourage me to continue innovating in my practice and sharing with the wider teaching community.
At the VietTESOL International Convention 2025, I look forward to contributing ideas on how English Language Teaching can intersect with visual arts and sustainable education.
