Description

This study addresses a persistent challenge in many English as a Foreign Language (EFL) contexts: learners struggle to develop integrated communication skills due to the traditional separation of listening and speaking and the emphasis on language form over communicative function. In contrast, integrated-skills assessments offer a more authentic model aligned with real-world communication demands.

The presentation introduces the theoretically grounded PACSR Framework, which is based on second language speech processing theory to break down oral communication into five teachable stages: phonological processing, auditory understanding, comprehension monitoring, semantic integration, and response formulation. This structured framework supports cognitively aligned task design and step-by-step scaffolding for integrated speaking and listening instruction.

Participants will explore a progression of tasks moving from controlled sentence-level practice to supported extended speaking, including activities such as gap-fill dictation, summarising spoken input, and visually supported oral tasks. The session also highlights the use of artificial intelligence tools, including text-to-speech, speech recognition, and automated feedback to personalise instruction and reinforce each PACSR stage.

This staged approach aims to reduce cognitive overload while building learners’ confidence and communicative competence transferable beyond test preparation. Attendees will receive practical templates, digital tools, and classroom strategies for implementing scaffolded instruction that supports integrated language use.
