Description
This mixed-methods study explores the impact of using authentic materials on students’ motivation in learning English reading. Authentic materials—such as online articles, advertisements, and news reports—offer real-world language exposure that may increase learners' interest and engagement. The research involved 30 EFL students who participated in a 6-week reading program incorporating authentic materials. Quantitative data were collected through pre- and post-intervention questionnaires using a standardized motivation scale. In addition, semi-structured interviews with a subset of participants provided qualitative insights into students’ perceptions and learning experiences. The quantitative results revealed a significant improvement in students’ motivation levels, while qualitative findings supported these results by highlighting increased interest, perceived relevance, and learner autonomy. These findings suggest that authentic materials can be an effective tool for enhancing motivation in English reading classes, with implications for language teaching practices in EFL contexts.
